Daily 5 and CAFE for the Upper Grades
29 May 2012
I am so excited!!! I've seen so many fabulous book studies for these books, but up to now, everything I've seen has been for primary.
Well ... guess what? I'm joining up with a group of fantastic bloggers to bring you the biggest and best book study for grades 4 - 6 ... and YOU'RE invited to join us! We're going to cover BOTH books - and discuss how to implement them in our upper grade language classrooms. Have I mentioned how excited I am about this??? I read both these books on my own last summer, and I really wanted to start using the ideas and strategies this year ... but I wasn't able to wrap my head around how it would work or what it would look like in my classroom. And now I KNOW that won't be a problem next year.
Make sure you have copies and get ready to join us. Our book study adventure begins at the beginning of July. I'll let you know a little more when we have more of the details ready.
Happy Tuesday (aka - testing Day 2) (aka - 23 more days to go ....)

DeleteI am going to be teaching LAL for the first time next year, I'm more of a math girl! But I am going to have a self contained/resource room next year so I have to teach all the core subjects. I've heard great things about these books and am so excited that I found a book study to help me get ideas on implementation! 3 periods of LAL is a scary thought, but I'm excited for the challenge!
ReplyDeleteYou're going to LOVE teaching Language Arts! I've wanted to implement the strategies from these books into my classroom, so I am so excited about this book study. I'll post more information this week!
DeleteI was happy to find this blog. I've been using the Daily 5 for the past 4 years in my kindergarten classroom, BUT. . .I'm moving to 5th grade and am anxious to continue using it! The Daily 5 is a wonderful management system. It really frees you up to work with kids and it gets kids working independently and more importantly . . .READING! It worked so well with 5 yr. olds...My daughter is a teacher and she has used it in her 5th grade classroom. I'm sure she can "shed some light" as well.
ReplyDeleteWow - that's a big change next year! I can't wait to hear the perspectives from all the people already using Daily 5 and CAFE, and all the ideas from the newbies just thinking about it. This is going to be great! I'll post some more information this week!
DeleteDebbie, I'd love to hook up with you! I'm moving from first to fourth this upcoming year.
DeleteQuestion ?? The Daily 5 and The Cafe books- the same ones used for primary grades or are there different ones for upper grades. Just checking before I buy. So excited .. Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's the same books, Melanie. Since so much of the information out there is geared to primary, I am so excited to get some more upper grade ideas out there!
DeleteAwesome!!! I had actually looked at this book a few days ago, now I have a reason to buy it now!!!
ReplyDeleteI bought both the books last summer. I can't wait for this book study to start! I'll post more information this week!
DeleteI'm so excited!! I was planning on reading CAFE. I don't have Daily 5 yet, though. Can't wait to start reading with you all!

ReplyDeleteI have been waiting to see more about this adventure in print! I am soooooooooo IN! I tried Daily 5/CAFE in my sixth grade class this year. There are several things I'd like to change--and I can't wait for a dialogue to help me accomplish this...
I am going to see The Sisters in Washington at the end of June. I am so excited! But I'm even MORE excited to chat with my Blog Friends about implementation.
Thanks to the Planners... This news may get me through the next two weeks!

Hello! I am so excited about an online professional literature circle! I'm a geek...I know. I saw the sisters in Toronto about 5-6 years ago in Toronto at the IRA convention. I know this might not be popular but I found them to be a little too "slick" in their presentation but I am willing to give the books a go. Always open to something new!
ReplyDeleteAs always your timing is perfect! just bought the book. have been toying with the idea since last summer. just never knew how to adjust for upper grades! Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteone more thought - can we be sure to discuss classroom arrangement relating to Daily 5?
