In Face the Cookie, you have to move a cookie from your forehead to your mouth, without using your hands. This was hilarious! My two youngest daughters spent yesterday practicing this event ... in preparation for the party and competing against the "big kids".
For Suck it Up, the girls transferred M&Ms from one plate to another, using a straw. Extra bonus at the end? You get to eat all the M&Ms ... what's not to love about that?
Pencil Backflip was a hit! You place pencils on the backside of your hand, then flip them into the air and catch them with the same hand you flipped them with. Start with one pencil and add an extra one each time you successfully catch them. One of the girls (the birthday girl) got up to 9 pencils!
A Bit Dicey was a bit harder than it looks. The girls had to stack 5 dice onto a popsicle stick held in their mouths, then balance them for 5 seconds. Five for Five!
Card Ninja was a blast! We had to keep moving the line forward so their cards would actually hit the watermelon (I'm pretty sure the wind outside wasn't helping). Eventually, a few of them got the wrist flick trick, and one of the girls stuck about 8 cards into the watermelon!
In Nose Dive, the girls had to transfer cotton balls from one bowl to another, with the help of a little vasoline on their noses. A little messy - but when they were finished they went for a swim ... how perfect is that?
I had a few more games planned, but only had time for the ones I have pictured. I guess we'll be having a few more minute to win it games at home tomorrow. ;)
The whole time I was planning the party, I kept thinking about how much fun this would be in the class! I totally want to do this as a special activity day - maybe right before Christmas? I could keep it rigorous by having the students create posters advertising the activities they made up (media / visual arts), procedure writing for the activity, maybe even some graphing. Can't wait!!!
These would be great in the classroom, especially on those days before vacations when it is hard to get them to focus on a typical schedule. Thanks for sharing!

Did this is my room and with my team. We had preliminaries the day before school was out for the 10 games we were going to play. On the last day, our champions in the event competed against the other three classes on our team. We even downloaded the music and time and played it so the spectators could count down. It was a blast!

We did some Minute to Win It games in my classroom after Field Day (since it is over by lunchtime). I got a kick out of finding things in the classroom to use (tweaking activities a bit if needed), and the kids enjoyed the competition. I divided them into two teams. They picked one kid from each team to compete in each game. Fun!

ReplyDeleteIt would also be a great raffle- maybe for the students who turn in all of their opening school packet "stuff". I think it would be a great all-or-nothing, just-go-for-it-and-be-crazy First Friday way to end our first couple days together. (Then make it a once-a-trimester tournament!) Could be a good way to show them that if play by THE rules, you get to PLAY by the MINUTE-TO-WIN-IT rules! On a side note, if you enjoyed the games, there IS a great game you should buy for your family - DICECAPADES! It is sooooo much fun to play with family and friends. Definitely an house game! Check it out!

ReplyDeleteHello! I'm thinking about throwing a Minute to Win It birthday party for my boyfriend. I'm was just wondering how to do it in terms of setting up how to play.. How many people did you have? Did you do teams? Did they go one at a time? I would appreciate any advice you can give me. Glad to know it worked out so well for you!

It actually depended on the activity - for some I had them go in pairs - just so it was easier to watch, some everybody did at the same time (there were 6 kids altogether), and some were individual. I used a timer on my ipad set to 60 seconds, and those not playing at the time, had a lot of fun counting down the time, too. There are a lot of great ideas and videos on youtube - that's where I got a lot of the ideas.
